Our New Learn Section on DomainTools.com

February 23rd, 2011 Comments off

Following up on our previous post about our new website and membership options, we wanted to take a moment to talk more in depth about our new Learn section on DomainTools.comDomainTools.com. In our continuous effort to help more novice visitors of our website who often write in to our support team asking questions such as “What is a domain name?” and “How do I buy or sell domains?”, we wanted to start a resource section of our website that talks about these topics more in depth. You may recall our article on domain valuation that we posted back in January on this blog – that was a sneak peak at the type of educational content to be featured on the relaunched website. In fact, the domain valuation article was one of our top performing posts in terms of the volume of people who read and shared blog content via Twitter, Facebook, etc. compared to other blog posts over the past year. We took that as a sign that we should be producing more valuable “How to” and “What is” focused articles.

Here’s the collection of educational content we have shared in our Learn section so far:

We hope to generate more insightful articles over time, continuously adding more advanced topics to our Learn library.

Do you  have any ideas on content you’d like to see? Please feel free to comment on this blog post.

Boxcar Relaunches, No More Reloading on Auction Listings

February 18th, 2011 Comments off

While at DOMAINfest we were surprised to meet Miguel Fiol, the founder of Boxcar and main brain behind DomainConsultant, at an early breakfast. Those who know him know that he usually does not hit the conference circuit before noon. But it was even more interesting to see him bear gifts – a Boxcar domain auction mood light along with a “ticket” that allowed to join Boxcar for a promotional price. He also told us that the site had recently undergone a redesign and today his team also added an auto-refresh for auction listings, thus eliminating the tedious page reloading as auctions come to a close. The site sold its 100th domain name on February 14th earlier this week.

Recent Sales include: VacationHouses.net, Plowing.net, StandingMRI.com, Tasers.com, NoLimitHoldEm.com, StreamingTV.com, MoneyGamer.com, CompanyCreditCard.com, Convection.net, Telescopes.org, AroundTheHorn.com, DomainName.com, DiamondRings.com, CamRoulette.com, SecurityGuards.com, PalmSpringsHomes.com

The Expert’s Corner: DomainTools Support

January 3rd, 2011 Comments off

Consumers Guide

Need Some Advice? DomainTools Can Point You in the Right Direction.

At DomainTools, we spend many hours working with our clients to ensure that the services we offer meet the varied needs of website owners, domain investors, and brand agents. What many people may not realize is the level of support and advice we provide daily to the non users of our services. Many registrants are not receiving or finding the necessary information they need to properly manage their domains. While we are not obligated to address these issues, we take pride in providing this helpful information in the hopes of aiding individuals and organizations in being better able to manage their domains and associated data.

A list of the most common issues we receive from non users:

  • How do I/we update or change our DNS? My hosting company said to contact you guys.
  • DNS changes can only be made through the registrar where the name is currently registered.  You should already have an established user account where your name is registered from which you can log in and update/change the DNS for your domain.  If you need assistance with this please contact the Support Team where the name is registered.

  • How do I/we update or change the WHOIS data for my domain name?
  • All of the information we display comes directly from the source registrar.  DomainTools has no authority or capacity to change or update any WHOIS record on our site.  You should already have an established user account with your registrar from which you can manage your domain name.  Please contact their Support Team for assistance.  Once you have updated the information with your registrar, the information we show will also update accordingly.

  • Why do I/we have to provide WHOIS data? What purpose does WHOIS data serve?
  • WHOIS services provide public access to data on registered domain names, which currently includes contact information for Registered Name Holders. The extent of registration data collected at the time of registration of a domain name, and the ways such data can be accessed, are specified in agreements established by ICANN. For example, ICANN requires accredited registrars to collect and provide free public access to the name of the registered domain name, nameservers and registrar, the creation and expiration date,  and the contact information for the Registered Name Holder (registrant) and the technical contact and administrative contact of the registered name.

  • I need my Authorization code. How do I/we request or Authorization/EPP code to transfer our domain name?
  • Your transfer authorization/EPP information can only be requested from the current registrar where the domain is registered.  The authorization/EPP will be sent to the current Administrative Contact email address listed in the account.  Most registrar’s offer the ability to request this electronically or offer information on how to request a transfer.  If you need assistance please contact the Support Team at your current registrar.

  • My/Our website is no longer visible on the web, why is that?
  • There are many reasons why a domain website may no longer be visible on the web.  It is best to always contact your Webmaster or Hosting Company first for assistance.

  • I/We failed to renew our domain, how do I go about getting it back?
  • Registrants who fail to renew their domain name are given the opportunity to renew the name while it remains in the ‘Redemption Period’. As long as the name remains in the Redemption Period, most registrars will allow you to re-register the name for an additional fee so that you do not lose the name.  After this period, the domain is set to pending delete and made available for re-registration soon thereafter.  If you need assistance please contact the Support Team at your registrar.

While many of these questions seem very basic to the experienced domainer, they are serious issues for people who simply do not know or have never had to find these specific answers before. We prefer to take the time to research each inquirer’s domain and correctly direct him or her to the correct registrar or hosting company. We explain and define many terms that are associated to domain registration, renewal, redemption, hosting and website creation. By providing the same level of client service to non users of DomainTools that we do to our clients, we will help to educate new domainers and foster good will toward the entire domaining community.

Knowledge Base for DomainTools Members

We also maintain an online Knowledge Base that is a great resource for DomainTools members who are seeking answers to questions about membership options and how to use different DomainTools products and services. Domain Consultant Plans Auction For Developed Sites

September 17th, 2010 Comments off

Following the lack of sales in the Epik DevCon Live Auction, DomainConsultant announced an auction selling a number of domains pointing to a developed e-commerce website – the Saltwater Dreams Action Spots Network.

According to DomainConsultant action sports is “a $7b industry“. Auction organizer Mike Fiol goes on to say:

But it gets even better as ALL the names have been developed with e-commerce and profit from $5000 to $7000 per month, every month, without the slightest hint of promotion or marketing.

Built over the last 13 years, this network also includes thousands of images, members and over 500 affiliate websites. It is AUTOMATED and requires little to no maintenance. Expenses for the whole network equate to $25/mo.

Price is absolutely right and should attract ALOT of interest, seller has agreed to a price equal to less than $325 per name.

This would bring the asking price for the package to about $400,000. If we take the monthly average of profit to be about $6,000 from the quote above, meaning the starting price is close to a 5.5 times multiple annual profit.

Here are some of the 1,244 domain names included in the package:

  • Bodyboard.com
  • SurfShops.com
  • SurfboardWax.com
  • SurfPicture/s.com
  • SurfForum.com
  • BoardBags.com
  • Bodyboarders.com
  • BoogieBoards.net
  • Tailpads.com
  • SurfingReports.com
  • Shortboarding.com
  • SurfRacks.com
  • SurfboardLeashes.com
  • SurfingSchools.com
  • SWD.com
  • BoogieBoarder.com
  • SurfingAccessories.com
  • SurfboardRepair/s.com
  • SurfboardFins.com
  • Wavecams.com
  • Noseguard/s.com
  • BoatingShops.com
  • BigIslandSurf.com
  • SkateboardTools.com
  • SkateboardForum.com
  • SkiingPasses.com
  • BoogieBoard.net
  • Streetboarders.com
  • SurfingClubs.com
  • SurfingWax.com
  • WindsurfingBoards.com
  • TubeRiding.com
  • SwimmingFin/s.com
  • SurfingApparel.com

Some of the names are run of an e-commerce engine, displaying customized sites under a number of domains, while others include a forum and a picture hosting site. All domains are in a single registrar account and all the websites are hosted on a single server with RAID, so an ownership transfer should be a straight forward process.

If interested, please email mike@domainconsultant.com and ask him for the prospectus. The information available to bidders also includes the full catalog of names/sites, information about revenue, industry, payment, labor, auction and transfer.
