Microsoft’s Office 365 further integrates Go Daddy Domains

October 9th, 2013 Comments off

According to a blog post by the Office 365 team, customers can now purchase their domains from Go Daddy directly through the product’s interface. The domain will then directly be enabled for use with Office 365 by setting up the correct nameservers and DNS records at the time of registration

Anybody got an Office 365 account? We’d be interested in seeing if this implementation includes premium/aftermarket domains. Let us know in the comments below.

Microsoft in Gold-Buying Frenzy

February 27th, 2013 Comments off
Software giant Microsoft has gone into a frenzy buying up domain names containing the words XBox and Gold in the last couple of days. Since the trend was first reported on Fusible, the company has bought at least 16 domain names containing the two words and has filed at least 2 UDRP complaints. The domain names XboxGold.biz, XboxGold.com.co, XboxGold.us, XboxGold.at, XboxGold.ch, XboxGold.jp, XboxGold.mx, XboxGold.ru, XboxGold.tw, XboxGold.fr, XboxGold.cn, XboxGold.es, XboxGold.eu, XboxGold.in, XboxGold.com.au and XboxGold.asia were all acquired recently while UDRPs were filed against the owners of Xbox-Gold.com (Case Number: 1484502) and XboxGold.org (Case Number: 1483759). With the next XBox rumoured to be unveiled in April to counter the PS4, speculation is rife over the name of the new device. While “Durango” is a popular choice, Microsoft’s

Microsoft reveals their new gTLD strategy

June 16th, 2012 Comments off

In the official Microsoft blog, Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Office at Microsoft, writes more about the company’s goals and movitation when participating in ICANN’s new gTLD application round.

Microsoft applied for 11 new gTLDs “most of which correspond to [Microsoft's] existing trademarked products, services and brands“:

  • .microsoft,
  • .windows,
  • .xbox,
  • .office,
  • .docs,
  • .bing,
  • .skype,
  • .live,
  • .skydrive,
  • .hotmail
  • .azure.

Mundie goes on to say: Our goal for our new TLDs is to promote responsible utilization of the Web and ultimately better experiences for consumers. Although we’re not yet talking about specific plans for the TLDs for which we’ve applied, we believe that – properly used – this expansion of domains can help deliver new services and capabilities to consumers and the Internet community as a whole. Appropriately utilized, the new TLDs can also protect the rights of trademark holders and brand owners, while promoting a safer and more secure computing experience.

As for the applications submitted by others, such as by Google for .search, Mundie writes that Microsoft is “just now reviewing all of the applications by other companies and organizations. We will work closely with ICANN and others to ensure competition and innovation are preserved for the industry, while also helping protect the rights and expectations of other stakeholders.

36 Fortune 100 Companies that applied for new gTLDs

June 13th, 2012 Comments off

When the idea of new gTLDs were introduced, it seemed logical that big brand owners would be the first to adopt.  The cost to own one’s own “dotBrand” is somewhat restrictive because of the application price of $185,000 in addition to the costs to run the new TLD.  Among the Fortune 100 though, one would assume the costs would be seen as minimal in comparison to the advantages of protecting a brand or expanding services and offerings.

From the list of the 1930 applicants released today, DNN has compiled a list of 36 Fortune 100 companies that have applied for new TLDs.  Of those, 20 companies are applying for more than one new gTLD and 16 of them are merely applying for their brand name in a new extension.

Amazon, Google and Microsoft are applying for the most new TLDs from this list, which would make sense based on their respective brand and product positions on the internet.  All of these companies can be considered pioneers of a new way of using brands on the internet.

Several of these corporations are being assisted by legal or brand management agencies such as Fairwinds, CSC and MarkMonitor. This information came from the ICANN filings and we have also noted in the list below.

Domaining.com Down

April 13th, 2012 Comments off

Domaining.com apparently is having some database issues – the database is currently being restored on a new server as the owner Francois tells us. It appears this week domaining blogs will all miss their referral traffic from Domaining.com – it remains interesting to see if any of the other aggregates is able to benefit from this down time. Good luck to Francois with restoring he server.

Mark Monitor Stealth Unit buys Lync.com for Microsoft

November 17th, 2010 Comments off

Registrar Mark Monitor acquired the domain name Lync.com through a stealth entity (“Name Advisers“) on behalf of Microsoft, as evidenced by recent whois changes. Lync is the name of Microsoft’s latest “unified communications” product. The Name Advisers’ site states: “Name Advisers provides product branding and domains services to the small business market.” I’m not quite sure if Microsoft counts as Small Business ;-)

[Thank you George]

Microsoft Aquires Office.com

August 6th, 2009 Comments off

Microsoft has purchased the domain name Office.com for an undisclosed amount of money - perhaps preparing for the rumored Microsoft Office 2010 web applications.

“At this point it’s too early to share details on our plans around www.office.com,” a Microsoft represented noted. However, Microsoft has already announced that Office 2010 will include the addition of browser-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

The previous domain owner, ContactOffice, has posted a message on the Office.com site telling users that they are transitioning to a new domain.

The Domain Space Reacts To Microsoft-Yahoo Deal

August 3rd, 2009 Comments off

It’s official - Microsoft and Yahoo have announced a 10-year search and advertising partnership that will give Microsoft’s Bing a better chance to show off its new search technology and provide Yahoo with an opportunity to challenge Google in online advertising.

And in case you’ve haven’t seen the details, the deal goes like this:

  • 10 year agreement.
  • Microsoft acquires an exclusive 10-year license to Yahoo’s core search technologies and can integrate these technologies into Bing.
  • Yahoo will continue to syndicate its current search affiliate partnerships.
  • Bing will be the exclusive search and paid search platform for Yahoo sites.
  • Yahoo will become the exclusive sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers. Self-serve ads for both companies will run by Microsoft’s AdCenter platform.

So Bing will now power the search algorithm on Yahoo/Bing and Yahoo will now power the premium search advertising for Bing/Yahoo.

But what does that mean to you?

After the jump, there’s a quick trip around the domain space on what people are saying:

Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineLand.com - Microsoft-Yahoo Search Deal Simplified
“This isn’t 1+1=2, beating the 1 of Google. The two together make it easier for advertisers to reach a common audience, but that’s the main benefit. Neither alone has a Google killer offering, and combined doesn’t just magically make that happen.”

David Hallerman of eMarketer as published in USAToday - Microsoft, Yahoo link up in Internet search deal
“The hope (for Microsoft and Yahoo) is that better technology will mean more relevant results and more relevant results will attract more users. More users mean more potential to click on ads and that means more money.”

Andrew Allemann of DomainNameWire - Dear DOJ: Don’t Slow Down Yahoo-Microsoft Deal
“The deal creates a competitor. It takes two also-rans in the search business and turns them into a true (although still relatively weak) competitor to Google…I’m convinced that having at least two viable advertising providers in the search space is critical to keep each one in check. Right now we have a growing ad provider in Google and a faltering one in Yahoo…By Yahoo and Microsoft joining forces, their scale will be enough to entice more advertisers to pay attention. This, in turn, will benefit web entrepreneurs.”

Michael H. Berkens of TheDomains - Done Deal: Yahoo Gives Microsoft Its Search Business
“What the deal means to domainers is far from settled. We have many of our domain names parked with various Yahoo parking partners. What this will mean to our bottom line is just a guess at this point but my guess it will be good for domainers.”

Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch - Yahoo Got Binged
“The two companies will work hard to pull this off. Their futures depend on it. And the deal is structured in a way that makes sure both sides make more money the more searches and advertising dollars Bing generates. Getting to that ideal state, though, won’t be easy. In the meantime, as they work through all of the implementation issues, Google could strengthen its position and take even more share.”

LLLL.com - Goodbye Yahoo Search
“What this will mean in the future for domainers and webmasters remains to be seen — I reported on July 26th that Bing users are much more engaged by advertising. It remains to be seen what the reason for this is and whether the television advertising and other promotions Microsoft is offering to promote Bing are skewing results…this will mean 12% lower paying clicks for those currently monetizing their domains through Yahoo, however, assuming the click-through rate for those monetizing their websites through Yahoo goes up anywhere near what Bing is currently reporting, they should end up earning more money resultant of this search partnership.”

Tom Demers of WordStream on SearchEngineJournal.com - Why I’m Torn on the Bing Yahoo! Deal
“For my money: PPC just got simpler, and SEO just got more complex.”

Arnold Zafra of SearchEngineJournal.com - What the Yahoo-Microsoft Search Deal Means to Everyone
“For web publishers, the search deal will: offer more competitive bids for search syndication deals, give more compelling advertising avenues to reach more users, and provide greater value and transparency.”

Ben Parr on Mashable.com - Google vs. Microsoft: Will This Time Be Different?
“Does Bing + Yahoo search represent Microsoft’s best shot at defeating Google? Unequivocally. Are were certain that Microsoft has a strategy for stealing market share? Absolutely.

Will it work? While we still believe Google’s not going anywhere, you never know what can happen when two titans go to all-out war. It fosters innovation, opens up the door to innovative startups, and keeps big corporations on their toes. Google’s needed a legitimate competitor for years. We finally have one, even if it’s made up of many complicated parts”

What are your thoughts? How do you think the Microsoft-Yahoo deal will affect domainers?
