UK Registry Seeks Input for Domain Expiry Policy

May 12th, 2011 Comments off

The market for catching dropping .UK domains is overrun by many companies, thus making it often a matter of luck who catches the released names. The reason for this is apparently the drop times and order picked at random by the registry along with the low fees for becoming a .UK registrar.

The registry just sent a message to one of it’s mailing lists soliciting feedback from stakeholders for a potential reform of how expired domain names are treated. Nominet also published a document (PDF) that explains the context of the request. The summary mentions and explains issues like expired domain tasting by the registrar, expired domain auctions and drop catching.

The main questions asked by the registry operator are:

  1. What should the principles of the expired period be?
  2. What should Nominet’s and the registrar’s obligations be to the registrant in the renewal of domain names?
  3. Many registrars will have provisions in their terms and conditions which outline what the registrar will do when a domain name expires. What type of notice and level of transparency should registrants reasonably expect where specific practices are undertaken in the expired period?
  4. In the context of encouraging innovation within the industry, how should Nominet’s  policies support the development of new business models whilst ensuring registrants’ expectations are met?
  5. What further background information would it be helpful for Nominet to provide to the issue group members to assist their discussions?

Instructions on how to participate can be found on the Nominet Website. Participation is open to all interested parties.

American Airlines Sunrise Application to Register aa.co.uk Rated “Invalid”

January 12th, 2011 Comments off

In the currently ongoing Nominet Sunrise phase for the release of “reserved short domains” (single and double letter of third level .uk) domain names (DNN reported previously) American Airlines missed out on getting aa.co.uk during the Sunrise phase.

According to the sunrise whois, there were four applications for the domain name so far:

  • American Airlines, Inc
  • Andrews & Arnold Ltd
  • The Automobile Association Limited
  • Anthony Hill

The American Airlines application has been rejected as “INVALID”, the application from “Andrews & Arnold” has been validated. The latter two applications are still pending validation. The sunrise phase closes for applications on January 17th.

While the UK trademark does pre-date 2008 as required (Filing date is 14 Aug 1998), it appears that American Airlines failed to submit proof of trademark use prior to 2008. As DNN understands they will have a chance to re-apply to have their trademark validated.

Nominet Considers Release of One and Two Letter Domains

March 9th, 2010 Comments off

Following the course of other TLDs, such as .DE, Nominet has posted a document for their members and registrars proposing the release of single and double character domain names in the third level of the .UK domain (under co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk and .net.uk). The release would exclude some domains that have been registered before the establishing of Nominet as the registry operator in 1996. According to the consultation, Nominet is considering releasing the domains in two phases: A first round for trademark holders, followed by a Dutch Auction (starting with a high price being reduced until a buyer is found, similar to the release of second level .MX domains).

The corresponding consultation runs for three months, from 8 March 2010 until 8 June 2010.  To provide your feedback, you can either complete the online survey or email your answers to shortdomains@nominet.org.uk.

Nominet announced last week that three new members - Clive Grace, Nora Nanayakkara, and Jonathan Robinson - were added to the board following an electoral vote.

Nora Nanayakkara is a notable member, having served as Sedo’s Business Development Director since November 2007 as well as being an elected member of Nominet’s Policy Advisory Body (PAB) since June 2008.

Clive Grace has served on a Corporate Governance Audit Committee for the Welsh Assembly Government and has been a member of numerous boards and councils since 1998 when she first chaired the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives.

Jonathan Robinson, the Chief Operating Officer of Netnames, has previously served as a Deputy Chairman on the Internet Council of Registrars (CORE) as well as the Director for NetBenefit. He also currently serves on the Board of Director for Afilias.

Nanayakkara has pledged to help Nominet by focusing on developing a strategy that reflects the realities of the .uk namespace, providing the board with rounded exposure to the wider stakeholder community, and implementing the governance changes needed to ensure that the .uk namespace remains a self-regulated hub for Britain’s online community. In total 455 members voted representing 16.41% of the electorate and 5,754,949 votes were cast which fulfills 63.90% of the possible number of votes.
