VeriSign to increase .NET prices by 10% on July 1st, 2013

Verisign - Domain Name Registration, DDoS and DNS ManagementVeriSign (NASDAQ:VRSN) just announced that intends to increase the .NET domain registration pricing by 10% on July 1st, 2013, bringing the price for registrars from $5.11 per domain name year to $5.62. The announcement about the increase for .NET fees follows the agreement with the Department of Commerce and VeriSign that it would not increase .COM prices unless there are significant cost increases in operating the TLD. The price change was announced via a press release on the company’s website. At least one registrar told DNN they have yet to receive a notification about the increase.

VeriSign also just lost their spot in the NASDAQ-100 index earlier this week.

ICANN Public Comment Period for .com Registry Agreement with Verisign ends Tomorrow

The ICANN public comment period for the .com Registry Agreement renewal with VeriSign ends tomorrow on Thursday April 26th at 23:59 UTC.

You can submit comments via to com-renewal@icann.org. In the second “reply” phase replies to the comments can be submitted limited to those who commented in the first phase – this phase will end on May 17th 2012.

The proposed agreement suggests to keep the .COM contract with VeriSign without opening it to competitive bidding, a process that when done with the .NET registry in 2005 resulted in lower .NET registry pricing ($5.89 per Domain Name Year). The proposed extension would allow VeriSign to increase registrations fees by 7% in four of the next six years, potentially bringing up the price from the current $7.85 to $10.29 by 2016.

In case some of you feel strongly about the anti-competitive nature of the .com renewal, you may also want to consider a submission to the US Department of Justice.

SnapNames to Increase Prices For Deleting Domains Starting Tomorrow

According to an email just sent out by SnapNames the pricing for backordering deletion domain names will increase from $59 to $69 starting tomorrow.

On February 15, SnapNames will raise the starting bid for backorders for all deleting domain names from $59 to $69. This starting bid increase applies only to orders for names that are deleted from their respective registries (not the expiring or privately held names listed from registrar partners or sellers).

This change applies exclusively to new orders—any previously placed deleting domain name backorders will be grandfathered in and remain at a starting bid amount of $59; thus, $59 will be the opening bid if the name enters our system. (Note, if you are the only bidder in this scenario, like today you will be the buyer at $59. If another party backorders the same name after February 15, that party’s opening bid will be at $69 and the system will alert you to raise your bid if you so elect.)

As is the case today, all non-deleting domain names will enter our system at the starting bid price specified by the listing party. Opening bids for those names will stay at the amounts originally set.

There is no change to auction procedures. If there is only one bidder for a name at the time of its availability, the name will be awarded to that bidder. For names with more than one interested party, the names will go to auction and the highest bid at or above the starting bid amount will prevail.

.ORG Prices To Increase April 2011

In an announcement sent to registrars, the Public Interest Registry (PIR) announced that they would follow suit with the recent Verisign increases and increase prices for .ORG domains to $7.21 per domain name year on April 1st, 2011.

The announcement reads:

This is a notice by Public Interest Registry (PIR), pursuant to Section 7.3(B) of the Registry Agreement between the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and PIR, of a price increase for .ORG domain name registrations.

Effective on April 1, 2011, at 0:00 UTC, the fee charged for domain name initial registrations, domain name renewals, and for transferring a domain name from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another will be US$7.21 per domain registration year.

Prior to this notification, PIR has increased the .ORG pricing only once, in November of 2008, since its inception in 2003. From that time to now, despite price increases by other TLDs, we have maintained our current wholesale fee and only passed through the increased ICANN fee starting in 2007.

Concurrent with this notification we are introducing two new programs. The .ORG Future Markets program, to help boost .ORG registrations in developing markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and the revised Accelerated Growth Upgrade rebate program to help boost .ORG registrations in core markets.
