Phuket And Back

I land in Chicago, I feel like Neo in the Matrix, once he is able to see the Matrix. People are rushing & running, their faces tell they are in an emergency mode, like missing a meeting, or on the verge of getting fired. Or maybe I’m thinking, it’s a pretty busy ant colony? You cannot land here and not see the major weight catastrophe this country faces. You look to your left, to your right, even up or down. Look inside a restaurant and it’s filled with people who cannot stop eating, and they obviously should. The food is literally spilling from their plates. Stress is everywhere, there is no calmness to be found. I find my next terminal and a airport worker comes to pick up an elder woman. She’s Hispanic, in her late 30’s. She has the potential to be a beautiful person, but obviously she isn’t. She screams across the terminal as if she is talking to a four year old “stay there, don’t you move!” and the woman she is talking to, must be in her 70’s, just mumbles to herself “ok, ok” with a guilt smile, as if she doesn’t understand what she has done wrong. People around me did not notice, it seems like completely normal. What am I missing? Sipping on some Chocolate Milk, reality hits - I’m back in the U.S after three weeks away.

This trip started with an email from a friend. He is from the U.K and is facing some major business challenges. He decided to head to Phuket for few weeks to relax. He mentioned to me he is leaving soon and the idea ran across my mind, but I was too busy with my life to pay much attention. Few days later he calls from Phuket, this time I stopped what I was doing. When he hung up the phone I thought this could be a nice idea, worth checking out. This was around 2PM and within one hour I found my next flight ,leaving early in the AM the morning after. Just as booking this trip without any idea where I’m heading, I decided not to book a hotel, go extremely light with one bag, and have a random experience.

I set few rules to myself as I was leaving:

1. No reading
2. Limited internet (email emergencies, Facebook picture uploads excluding reading other people’s updates)
3. No news
4. No business

I stuck with most of these rules but meeting other friends there, I did talk a little about business, but not too much.

The flight was long, but a couple of good movies and lots of classical music, and it was perfectly fine. I landed in Phuket some 30 hours after leaving Florida. My friend there met me at the airport, already booked a room at a local hotel, and off we were. We arrive to the hotel, it isn’t a five star hotel (nor did I want one) but it is nice and clean, and has everything I would need. It’s 1AM, I drop the bags, and we had to a local bar for drinks. Girls everywhere, smiles everywhere, music everywhere, and even some lady boys around. Welcome to Phuket, Thailand.

The rest I will tell in the pictures below (more pix on FB), as I can probably fill a book if I continue writing. The short version is I had a great time, I went solo after a couple of days. That day I woke up in the morning, didn’t know what to do, took my scooter and drove NORTH. I found myself within those random drives. I ate healthy for the whole trip, I exercised, I learned to spend hours on the beach without a plan, and I made many new friends. New year in Patong was absolutely amazing. Yes, I will be back, soon.

More Reasons to Attend Milano, Italia’s T.R.A.F.F.I.C. in April

March 23rd, 2010 Comments off
Think T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Milan like a vacation in Italy at a 40% discount. When else do you get a chance to make a tax deductible trip to beautiful places like Lake Como (pictured here)? This famous lake, home to the real Belagio, is a short drive from Milan. Milan itself has much to offer. The city is often [...]

Why I rode a bicycle from Atlanta to New Orleans

February 12th, 2010 Comments off
After eleven days of rain, wind, cold, chasing dogs, shady casino adventures, cheap hotels and endless hills, David and I arrived in New Orleans for Domainer Mardigras. I’d love to tell you the trip was all fun and games but that wouldn’t be very truthful. More than anything, it was the weather that broke us. I [...]

You just can’t make this stuff up. Our shinny new hotel was raided yesterday

February 5th, 2010 Comments off
So yesterday I blogged about finding this Oasis of a hotel actually called The Oasis. It’s a brand new and very comfortable resort outside the city of Montgomery. The plan was to take a day off from cycling and work and rest our legs. I didn’t even leave my hotel room until after our auction ended [...]

Good things can happen to good people. Lost in the woods, we found an Oasis

February 3rd, 2010 Comments off
There’s an app for that. Right? Well, as a loyal iPhone fan I’ve been navigating mine and David’s journey to New Orleans with my smart phone. Between the map app and an app from mapmyride.com everything had been going smooth…. until today. What I’ve been doing is using the map app and having it set to [...]

Sweet Home Alabama – Three days down

February 3rd, 2010 Comments off
So David and I have now completed three days of the cycling trip from Atlanta to New Orleans for Domainer Mardigras. Yesterday was so brutal that I’m just now getting this post up, and we still have to ride another 50 miles today to Montgomery. Thankfully, the weather will be terrible tomorrow. That means we can sit [...]

Who knew that north Georgia to the coast was all uphill?

February 1st, 2010 Comments off
Either I’ve been riding a bike for two days or David snuck into my room last night. I feel like I’ve been sitting on the curved handle of an umbrella for a week straight. Today while we surely lost altitude, regardless of my post title, it felt like an endless climb. Every time we went downhill, [...]

I ride for domains, I ride for clean water but mostly, I ride for me

January 31st, 2010 Comments off
Sunday morning David Clements and I went on a bicycle ride. Our journey will take us from Atlanta to New Orleans for Domainer Mardigras. While that may not sound like a lot to those of you in peak physical condition, it’s a heck of a journey for two middle-aged, over-weight guys like us. Keep in mind, we [...]

Hard Rock Drops Room Rates Again

January 16th, 2010 Comments off
After reading a post on Domain Shane’s blog about him finding a room at The Hard Rock for only $64 per night, we immediately called our contacts there. Even if you have already booked your room, they will lower your rate, again. We didn’t get them down to $64 per night but we did get them [...]
